Re-Animator 40th Anniversary 4K Blu-ray

Re-Animator is the best movie ever made from an H.P. Lovecraft story. That’s because director Stuart Gordon knew how to deliver enough blood and guts to satisfy the gore audience while still infusing it with macabre humor to help the gross stuff go down more smoothly for the squeamish. It’s an undeniable horror masterpiece. And now it hits Blu-ray in a stunning, extras-laden 40th anniversary edition from Ignite Films. The movie has been remastered in gorgeous 4K, too. This is absolutely one of 2025’s biggest must-own releases.

For the uninitiated, the story revolves around Dr. Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs), a med student at Miskatonic University. In the basement of the science building, he works on a special agent he developed that brings the dead back to life. Having successfully re-animated a cat, he now wants to try it out on a human being. Colleague Daniel Cain (Bruce Abbott) and his fiancée Megan Halsey (Barbara Crampton) get pulled into the horror as West takes this next step.

So much about Re-Animator is iconic, from Jeffrey Combs’ perfect geek madman performance to the scene where the severed head of villainous Professor Carl Hill (David Gale) attempts to perform oral sex on Megan. The movie additionally turned Combs and Crampton into legends in the horror community. It spawned two sequels, Bride of Re-Animator in 1990 and Beyond Re-Animator in 2003, plus a stage musical.

What is it that audiences have long responded to? Certainly, it’s the go-for-broke spirit Gordon brings to the story. When the movie is gory, it’s very gory. When there are special effects used, they go full force in their gruesomeness. Similarly, the humor doesn’t hold back from going to bizarre or sick places. The whole picture is designed to be extreme, and with solid acting at the core, that mixture works exceedingly well. You don’t just watch Re-Animator, you experience it.

Ignite Films’ Blu-ray has two versions of the film, the unrated version and the “integral” version that includes additional footage that was used in the watered-down R-rated cut. New bonus features are as follows:

Re-Animator at 40 - Producer Brian Yuzna and stars Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton have a 45-minute discussion about the film, sharing memories of the casting process, working with Stuart Gordon, and the demented pleasures of shooting. The three have the kind of easygoing rapport that old friends possess, and the stories they share are gold for fans. Best of all, there’s genuine emotion in their remembrances, which elevates this beyond the usual retrospective feature.

Piece by Piece: Cutting Re-Animator is an interview with editor Lee Percy, who talks about the challenges of editing a film where the initial assembly ran more than two hours. He reveals some of the material he urged Gordon to cut in order to get it down to a lean-and-mean 86 minutes. You can tell from the way he talks about it that Percy maintains great affection for Re-Animator.

The Horror of It All: The Legacy and Impact of Re-Animator brings together a collection of horror directors – including Joe Lynch, Jackson Stewart, and Mick Garris – to talk about what Re-Animator means to them and how it’s influenced them. They additionally share fun remembrances of how they first saw the movie. This segment provides insight into how Gordon’s masterpiece shaped an entire generation of genre filmmakers.

Susie Sorority and the Good College Boy puts the spotlight on Carolyn Purdy-Gordon, Stuart’s widow. She presents touching personal insights into her husband, including a wild story about how they met via a random drunken phone call.

I Give Her Life: A Look Back at Re-Animator: The Musical is, as the title suggests, a documentary about the stage version Gordon mounted and the technicalities of transferring the story from one medium to another without losing its appeal.

Re-Animating a Horror Classic is a brief, two-minute look at the equipment that gloriously restored Re-Animator in 4K.

The Organic Theater Company of Chicago is a 1977 documentary that looks at Gordon’s experimental theater troupe.
